The PLA2G16 protein has dual functions, acting as a phospholipase to exert calcium-independent PLA1 and PLA2 activities, preferentially releasing fatty acids through PLA1. It also acts as an O-acyltransferase and N-acyltransferase, helping to form N-acylphosphatidylethanolamine (the precursor of N-acylethanolamine) .
