Together with its regulatory partners CCNH and MNAT1, CDK7 functions as an important serine/threonine kinase in cell cycle regulation and RNA polymerase II-mediated transcription. As the catalytic subunit of the CDK-activated kinase (CAK) complex, CDK7 plays a key role in activating CDK1/cyclin-B and CDK2/cyclin during cell cycle transitions.
